Cortland Street in Groton, New York, is the particular setting here, shown in winter with snow lying deep along the roadway and teams of horses pulling sleighs eastward. Sleighs were a common means of travel and hauling in small upstate New York villages before the automobile became widespread, and a snowy street like this would have been busy with farm wagons, delivery rigs, and passengers bundled against the cold. The photograph was taken by Verne Morton and is part of the Wittemann Collection at the Library of Congress. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the scene captures a working winter street of the early twentieth century.
