A pair of horses strains against a street car so packed with passengers that the wheels can barely turn, the scene that gives this 1872 wood engraving its title, "The Crowded Car." Sol Eytinge drew the scene for *Harper's Weekly*, where it ran in the September 21, 1872, issue. New York's horse-drawn streetcars were often overloaded, and the animals that pulled them were frequently overworked. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded in New York in 1866, had been pressing for better treatment of such animals, which makes the print a pointed piece of social commentary as well as a view of city transit.
