The title, "The last of the Horses," points to Engine Company 205 of the New York Fire Department at a moment when its horse-drawn team was nearing retirement. By the early 1920s the department was replacing horse-drawn apparatus with motorized engines and trucks, ending a tradition of animal-powered firefighting that dated to the nineteenth century. The photograph's date, around December 1922, places it near the end of that changeover, when stables and their teams were being emptied out. The image is worth a close look for the way it records a working scene just before horses disappeared from the city's firehouses.
