Union Horse & Chemical No. 3 was a fire company in York, Pennsylvania, and this view from around 1911 shows its equipment at a time when horses still pulled most American fire apparatus. Combination "horse and chemical" companies carried soda-acid extinguishers alongside hose and ladders, and they relied on teams that had to be fed, shod and ready to run at any hour. The photograph was copyrighted by Simon & Murnane, a York studio, and it dates to just before motorized trucks began replacing horse-drawn engines in the 1910s.
