A motor truck, a Mack, shares a New York State construction site in this 1913 print with workers and teams of horses, so the two methods of hauling stand side by side. By the early 1910s, gasoline trucks were beginning to take over freight work that had long belonged to horse-drawn wagons, but on many job sites horses remained the familiar workhorses for moving earth, stone, and materials. The picture records that transition in progress, when a contractor might still depend on animals even as machines arrived. The image is part of the Library of Congress's collection of 1910s prints.
