An Indigenous man sits on horseback with a rifle across his body in this 1901 photograph taken at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Fairs of that era often staged displays of Indigenous people meant to evoke the frontier, and Buffalo's exposition, which ran from May to November 1901, was no exception. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, was a prominent portrait and documentary photographer whose work is held by the Library of Congress. The Library's 1964 print preserves the image from the fair, and the posed setting invites questions about how the rider was presented to visitors.
