A husband and wife pose together with their horse at Keswick, in Albemarle County, Virginia, with the general holding the reins while his wife sits in the saddle. The man is almost certainly William "Billy" Mitchell (1879-1936), the Army officer who became the country's most vocal champion of air power in the 1920s. He was court-martialed in 1925 for publicly criticizing the military's handling of aviation and left the service in 1926. Photographs like this one, showing him at leisure on horseback rather than in uniform, offer a quieter view of a man better known for his public fights over airplanes.
