Few Civil War photographs tie a single animal so directly to a named officer. This one is titled "Gen. Rawlin's horse taken at Cold Harbor, Va.," and the record links it to John A. Rawlins, Ulysses S. Grant's chief of staff and close adviser during the Overland Campaign. The fighting at Cold Harbor in early June 1864 included Grant's failed assaults of June 1 to 3, which produced some of the war's heaviest losses, and this print is dated June 14, after the battle had ended. The subjects also include African American workers in the area, a reminder of the many Black laborers and teamsters who worked behind Union lines.
