This glass negative is titled "Gen. Grant's horse," which points to a horse once ridden by Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general and later president. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. The Bain News Service was a New York press photography agency, and its glass negatives mostly date from the early 1900s through the 1920s, long after Grant's death in 1885. Pictures like this were often made to accompany news or feature stories about Civil War figures and their memorabilia, so the image likely records a later display or retelling rather than a scene from Grant's own lifetime.
