Charles S. Howard poses with Seabiscuit at Arcadia, California, after the horse won the Santa Anita Handicap, as recorded in this March 1940 Acme Newspictures print. Santa Anita, which opened in 1934, quickly became one of the country's best-known tracks, and its signature race drew large crowds and national press. Howard, an automobile dealer who owned the horse, became a familiar public face of the sport during the Depression years. The wire-service origin of the print shows how closely newspapers followed the horse's celebrated career.
