The caption places Brigadier General Watson on horseback beside the Mayor of Jerusalem in December 1917, just before the city surrendered to British forces. The moment captures the transfer of authority over a city that was holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and that the British had been pushing toward since 1916. The Matson Collection photographs of the British campaign in Palestine were made in the war's final years, and this one is notable for showing a military officer and a civic leader together at a turning point. The date and identifications come from a caption card and have not been independently verified.
