Napoleon appears on horseback in this engraving of the Battle of Lützen, fought near the town in Saxony on May 2, 1813, the date given in the title. The battle was one of the first large engagements of the campaign that followed the French retreat from Russia, and Napoleon's army, many of its soldiers newly conscripted, pushed back the combined Russian and Prussian forces. The print was engraved by Ales after a drawing by the French artist Auguste Raffet, and it reflects the period's habit of showing the emperor as a commanding figure above the fighting. The caption card gives no date, so the title is the only source for the battle date.
