Horses and riders splash through shallow water with a wagon behind them, a scene from the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, known as the Rough Riders, at Montauk Point on the eastern tip of Long Island. The regiment was sent there in August 1898, after its Cuban campaign in the Spanish-American War, to recover from illness, chiefly malaria and typhoid, while the army awaited orders. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the camp, took many views of the men and their horses there. Her pictures remain one of the best visual records of the regiment's time at Montauk.
