A chief on horseback bars the way for a wagon train in this 1874 wood engraving, and its title states that he is forbidding passage through his country. It appeared in Harper's Weekly on September 19, 1874, on page 773, in an illustrated weekly that brought images of the West to readers across the East. By the 1870s, wagon trains were crossing lands that Plains nations still held, and scenes like this shaped how those encounters were presented to a mostly white readership. The record's details come from older caption data, so read the scene as a period artist's interpretation.
