Wilhelm II sits astride his horse here, reviewing troops during the First World War. He had ruled Germany since 1888, and his abdication came in November 1918. Such reviews were meant to show him close to the army, though major military decisions had largely passed to the high command. The caption card, whose data is unverified, also names Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff, the generals who led that command from 1916. Images like this were widely circulated to project confidence on the home front.
