This 1946 photomechanical print shows a mounted knight discharging a small cannon that rests on a saddle support and is braced against his chest, a detail that sets it apart from the other horse pictures on the board. The record dates the subject to roughly 1400 to 1450, when gunpowder weapons were only beginning to appear on European battlefields. Early handgonnes and small cannon were crude, heavy, and difficult to aim, so the image captures a moment when a rider had to combine horsemanship with an unfamiliar and unsteady weapon. Reproductions like this one let later readers study such early military technology.
