Mounted knights locked in close combat fill this 1489 woodcut, and the title's note that only some of the fighters are on horseback points to a crowded melee where riders and foot soldiers mix. Woodcuts like this were printed in the late 1400s, when cheap block printing carried battle scenes and chivalric stories to readers across Europe. The subject reflects a long tradition of romance and historical chronicle, and the bold, economical lines show how a printmaker suggested motion and crowding with a few carved blocks.
