Columns of mounted troops move across this print, which the title credits to a Major Tomkins, and the photograph shows the horse-borne cavalry that still anchored the U.S. Army in the 1910s. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm known for stereographs and press pictures, made the image around 1916, a year when American cavalry units were active in the border campaign against Pancho Villa in Mexico. The photograph is a useful record of how the mounted arm looked just before motorized vehicles began to change it.
