A mounted polo player identified only as Captain Cheape is the focus here, with the rider and pony caught in the middle of the game. The caption card that accompanies the print is old and unverified, and it gives no date. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photography service that worked mainly in the early 1900s. Polo was a fashionable sport then, played by wealthy amateurs in the United States and Britain, and photographs like this one documented those players and their ponies for newspapers and magazines.
