The plate measures about 13 by 11 centimeters and bears the artist's monogram and the date 1909, with this impression also signed in pencil by hand. Karen Beall's catalog of American prints at the Library of Congress lists it as number 29. Early twentieth-century American etchers often worked on small plates like this one, drawing on the European etching revival of the late 1800s to capture quick, atmospheric scenes. Horses and riders were a favored subject for artists who wanted to pair animal movement with open landscape, and the pencil signature suggests the artist checked this impression individually.
