A tent camp beside a stream, with two men, two horses, a pack burro, and a dog, makes this frontispiece unusual among the views on this board. The engraving, credited to Richardson and Cox, opens Frederick Law Olmsted's *A Journey Through Texas*, published in 1857, and also serves as the book's title page. Olmsted had traveled through Texas in the early 1850s, writing for a New York newspaper about settlement, slavery, and life on the frontier, and his book grew out of those reports. The scene gives readers a sense of the rough, mobile camping that his travels required.
