Pack horses loaded with supplies gather at Seoul, the point from which Japanese forces began moving north into Korea during the early months of 1904. Russia and Japan were at war over control of Korea and Manchuria, and Seoul had become the staging ground for Japan's push toward the Yalu River and the Manchurian front. The photograph was taken for Collier's Weekly, which ran it in March 1904 and later reprinted it in James H. Hare's 1905 photographic record of the conflict. Pack animals such as these carried much of the weight of an army that could not rely on roads or railways in the mountainous interior.
