Pack horses picking their way down a steep slope, with a trooper working up the divide behind them, make this 1895 halftone a view of hard, ordinary work in the backcountry. The caption card links the scene to Wyoming, a setting that fits the years when the U.S. Army patrolled Yellowstone National Park, a duty it held from 1886 until the National Park Service took over in 1916. Soldiers on these mountain routes moved supplies, checked on visitors, and guarded against poaching and vandalism. As a halftone, the picture also reflects how newly practical photomechanical reproduction let readers see western scenes like this in magazines and books.
