A lone man leads two pack horses along a mountain road in China, with cliff dwellings lining the rock face beside the path. The caption card links the scene to the Marco Polo route and the ancient Silk Road, the network of trade paths that carried goods and travelers between China and the West for centuries. On rough mountain terrain, pack animals were often more practical than wheeled carts, which made horses central to that overland trade. The card records no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the picture captures the long tradition of caravan travel in the region.
