A man leads a team of horses and wagons loaded with seed cotton, headed for the gin, in this 1917 photograph from the Library of Congress. Cotton was the dominant cash crop across much of the American South in those years, and the trip from field to gin was a central step in turning the harvest into marketable fiber. Before the gin separated fiber from seed, raw cotton had to be hauled by wagon, often over rough rural roads, so scenes like this one show the animal labor that kept the crop moving. The horses and wagons also reflect how dependent farm work still was on draft animals in the early twentieth century.
