Gordon's Food for Horses & Cattle was a feed product, and this color lithograph was made to promote it. Printed in Philadelphia by the Avil Co. in the 1880s, it belongs to a wave of chromolithographic advertising that merchants handed out or posted in shops, often colorful enough to keep. Horses were essential then for hauling goods, pulling streetcars, and working farms, so a feed maker had a ready audience among owners who depended on their animals' health. The print also carries a U.S. copyright notice, which shows the design was registered for protection.
