A linocut made by Dorothy Gordon when she was 13, this print takes horses as its subject, a choice that suits the medium's bold, simplified cuts. It is dated to about 1933 and comes from the Harlem Art Workshop material in the Harmon Foundation records at the Library of Congress. The Harmon Foundation, founded in 1922, promoted African American artists and encouraged young talent, so works like this one document an emerging generation of makers in New York during the 1930s. The record knows the picture only through a copy photograph, which makes the print a useful glimpse of a young artist's early work in printmaking.
