Three Piegan men and four horses stand together on a hill above a river in this view, the riders dressed in traditional clothing. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1910 for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, where it appears as plate 184 in volume 6. The Piegan, one of the Blackfeet nations of the northern Plains, relied on horses for hunting, travel and trade by that time, and Curtis often paired such scenes with clothing and equipment to record a way of life he believed was changing quickly.
