Three riders on horseback are the focus of this stereograph, made in Yankton, the Dakota Territory town that served as the territorial capital through the 1870s. S.J. Morrow's card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, where two slightly offset photographs blend into one image with depth. Horses were central to life on the Plains by the 1870s, so the riders and their mounts offer a window onto the period, though the original caption's tribal label is unverified and should be read with caution.
