Three riders lean low over their horses in this color lithograph, a racing scene whose title was supplied by Library staff rather than taken from the print itself. It dates to about 1885 and bears the copyright line of the Jno. B. Jeffery Printing and Engraving Company of Chicago, a firm that produced colorful lithographs for commercial and popular audiences in the 1880s. Horse racing was a popular spectator sport in that period, and lithography's bright inks were well suited to capturing its speed and drama.
