Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Hideki Tōjō appear together in this caricature lithograph, whose title, "The three horsemen," recalls the biblical Four Horsemen and casts the Axis leaders as riders bound for ruin. Henry Simon signed it in pencil and initialed the stone, so the drawing was made directly on the lithographic plate, a method well suited to quick, pointed political comment. It dates from the Second World War, when Germany, Italy and Japan fought as the Axis powers, and satirical images like this one served as both wartime commentary and propaganda.
