Three riders, identified in the record as Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Hideki Tōjō, make up this lithograph by Henry Simon. The horse as a symbol of conquest is a long-standing device in political cartoons, and the title's echo of the riders of Revelation suggests Simon meant these men as harbingers of ruin. Made during World War II, when Germany, Italy and Japan fought together as the Axis powers, the print presents the three leaders as a single threat. Simon signed it in pencil and initialed the stone, so the hand of the artist is visible in the finished impression.
