Dürer's Four Horsemen is the opening woodcut of his series on the Book of Revelation, showing riders of conquest, war, famine and death sweeping across the earth. Dürer cut the blocks himself and first published the Apocalypse series in 1498 with German text, then reissued it in 1511 with Latin text, which helped spread his reputation across Europe. This impression is a second edition, with Dürer's monogram cut into the block. The dramatic sense of motion and the dense, controlled linework show why these prints were so influential for later artists.
