Four riders cross the floor of Haleakala Crater on the island of Maui, a volcanic basin so large that the horsemen look small against its walls. Haleakala became part of Hawaii National Park in 1916, and the trails across its floor were a draw for visitors who came to ride into the crater rather than simply look down into it. The record dates the print only to around 193-, so it likely belongs to the 1930s, when tourism to the islands was growing and photographers often staged scenes like this to promote the park. Notice how the riders are spread across the wide, barren floor, which gives a sense of the crater's scale.
