Here the riders and hounds are shown in full pursuit of a fox across open English farmland, a scene of the kind that defined the country sport of the period. The print was published as an illustration in the 1796 edition of William Somerville's *The Chase*, a blank-verse poem first issued in 1735 that treats fox hunting in a mock-heroic manner. Engravings like this one gave readers a visual sense of the hunt's energy and its place in rural gentry life. The catalog record lacks confirmed details about the engraver, so the image is best read as a document of how the hunt was pictured in late eighteenth-century Britain.
