A man named Don Paneho guides a herd of horses through the Isabella River in the Dominican Republic, and the river's name points back to La Isabela, the settlement Christopher Columbus founded on the island's north coast in 1493, one of the first European towns in the Americas. The picture is dated to about 1904 or 1905, a time when overland travel in rural areas was often difficult and rivers were routinely used as crossings for animals and goods. The record comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so the details of the scene are best read as a period snapshot rather than a documented account.
