Few images in the gallery show hunger as bluntly as this engraving, which depicts Texans slaughtering their horses in the mountains to stay alive. It was printed as an illustration in the *Journal of the Texan Expedition against Mier*, published in 1845, which recounted a failed 1842 campaign into northern Mexico. The Texan force, cut off and poorly supplied, surrendered near Mier in December 1842, and its men were marched south as prisoners. Horses were vital on the frontier, so their slaughter marks the point where the animals that had carried the expedition became its last source of food.
