A string of pack horses loaded with bundles of fuel makes its way down the Hakone Mountains in this stereograph, a sight that was once common on the mountain roads west of Tokyo. Hakone is volcanic country, and its old routes, including the Tōkaidō stretch that crossed the range, relied on horses and porters long before motor trucks reached the district. Keystone View Company, an American firm known for stereo views, issued the card, and its date of about 1928 comes from the caption, so some details remain unverified.
