A street scene built around a fountain and a group of horsemen, rendered in brown and black ink with wash on a sheet about 20 by 20 centimeters. The lower left corner carries the artist's signature and date, and a pencil note on the back names Philippe Wouverman, the Haarlem painter Philips Wouwerman (1619–1668), who became known for horses and riders. The catalog data are still marked preliminary, so the attribution and the 1640 date should be read with that caution. Wash drawings like this were often quick studies or finished works in their own right, letting an artist test light, shadow and movement.
