Mounted Kyrgyz men are the subject of this print, which shows riders on horseback in the Siberian territories of the Russian Empire in the mid-1880s. It belongs to the George Kennan Papers, and Kennan, an American writer who traveled across Siberia in 1885 and 1886 to report on the Russian exile system, likely gathered or was given images like this during his journeys. Horsemanship was central to Kyrgyz pastoral life, since herding, travel and trade all depended on skilled riders, so the picture also records a way of life that was changing under expanding Russian administration.
