Mounted riders charge at one another with sticks while rulers watch from a tent, and a large band of drummers, horn players, and cymbalists provides the noise. The engraving's notes give a date of 1787/1820, which suggests the plate was made in the late eighteenth century and printed or reissued around 1820, a time when European publishers produced many illustrated accounts of courtly entertainments in distant lands. Such scenes were often assembled from travelers' sketches and secondhand reports, so the details of costume and setting are worth reading as a European view of the spectacle. The horses, posed in the middle of the action, are the clearest subject here.
