Fort Morgan, a town on the South Platte River in northeastern Colorado, is the setting for this scene of men and horses working a field while a machine stacks a large pile of hay. Irrigated farming expanded along the river after canals and railroads reached the area in the late 1800s, and hay fed the draft horses and livestock that ran local ranches. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the picture records the shift from hand pitching to machine-aided haying that came with that growth.
