This group portrait shows the defendants and court participants gathered for the trial of Plenty Horses, a Lakota man charged in the 1890 killing of an Army lieutenant near the Pine Ridge reservation. The case came to court in 1891, in the uneasy months after the Ghost Dance movement and the Wounded Knee massacre had drawn federal troops into the region. Trials like this one attracted newspaper attention across the country, and photographs of the people involved were rare. The picture is worth studying for its record of who sat in the room and how a legal proceeding involving a Native defendant was staged for the public.
