Horses drinking from water on a hot July day in New York City, 1911, are the focus here, and the subject tag for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals points to the society's role in caring for working animals in the city's streets. In the 1910s, horse-drawn carriages and delivery wagons still crowded New York, and the ASPCA maintained public watering troughs and promoted water for animals during summer heat. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made for the Bain News Service that recorded everyday city life for newspapers of the period.
