The title, *Three Horses*, appears to be the name of the man photographed, which sets this portrait apart from many Curtis images labeled only by tribe or type. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1905 as part of his effort to document Native peoples of North America, work that became *The North American Indian*, a multivolume series published from 1907 to 1930. The feathered headdress and clothing reflect the regalia Curtis often had sitters wear, so viewers today should keep in mind that these portraits show carefully arranged scenes as much as everyday life.
