Few portraits from this period name the sitter's own act as their context, but this one shows Plenty Horses, a Lakota man, in a Sioux Falls studio around 1891. That year he became known nationally after he shot Lieutenant Edward W. Casey near the Pine Ridge agency in January, an incident that unfolded during the tense months surrounding the Ghost Dance and the army's presence on the reservations. The studio was run by L.T. Butterfield, and the cabinet card format was a common, inexpensive way to circulate portraits in the 1890s. Its posed, formal style invites a closer look at how a man at the center of a controversial event chose to present himself to the camera.
