Two cowboys work at the business end of a cattle outfit's remuda, stopping their horses' feet so the animals can graze without wandering off. Hobbling was a routine chore on western ranges in the early 1900s, when many ranch horses ran loose on open grass and had to be gathered each morning from wherever they had scattered overnight. The loose strap or rope tied between a horse's front legs kept it from moving far, and the cowboy who set it had to balance speed with care so the animal would not be injured. The photograph is a copyright deposit from around 1906, one of many Western working scenes registered in that decade, and it records a daily task that rarely appears in later Western imagery.
