Chile's cattle country in the central valley was worked by huasos, the local horsemen who herded livestock on the haciendas and whose riding and roping style set them apart from cowboys elsewhere in the Americas. This print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, made by a travel writer and his wife who documented distant places for American readers and lecture audiences in the decades around 1900. The record dates it only to the years between 1890 and 1923, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the riders and herd together show the working horse culture that defined the region at the time.
