Two rearing horses strain forward in front of a chariot in this sculpture, which a photographer recorded inside a Roman museum around 1900. Chariot groups were a favorite subject of ancient Roman sculptors, who drew on Greek models and used the pose to suggest speed, power, and victory. Chariots were tied to racing at the Circus Maximus and to triumphal processions, so the image would have carried those associations for viewers. Photographs like this one also documented antiquities that were then being arranged and displayed in the city's growing collections.
