Two horses still stand in harness beside a 75mm field gun and its limber, the ammunition cart that hitched behind it, after Polish soldiers fled and left them behind. Poland's army in 1939 depended heavily on horse-drawn artillery, and the 75mm gun, a French-designed weapon, was a common piece in its field batteries. The caption card gives no date and its notes are unverified, so the exact circumstances are uncertain. Even so, the scene shows how much the army still relied on animal traction when it faced faster, mechanized forces.
